Fiber Technician Program

Program Information:

The Cherokee Nation Career Services Fiber Technician Program is a customized, short-term training program developed following the signing of the Career Readiness Act in 2019. The program provides focused training opportunities for tribal citizens that lead directly to gainful employment.

The Fiber Technician Program is an intensive hybrid training course designed to prepare participants for careers in the broadband industry. Training combines aerial construction and lineman fundamentals with technical instruction in fiber and broadband installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Classroom instruction is paired with hands-on, practical training to ensure participants gain both technical knowledge and real-world experience.

Participants will receive OSHA-10 certification during the program.

Program Length:

  • 480 hours
  • Three months (12 weeks)

Program Hours:

  • Monday – Friday
  • 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Program Benefits:

Program assistance includes free tuition, school supplies, and the required training equipment. 
Students accepted into the program will receive Economic Assistance Payments (EAP) of $10 per hour, up to 40 hours per week.
Participants who successfully complete the program and obtain employment in the fiber or broadband industry will be allowed to keep the training gear provided during the program.
Participants who successfully complete all required coursework may earn up to seven micro-credentials. Learners who meet the evaluation criteria and demonstrate proficiency will receive OSUIT micro-credentials recognized and approved by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE). Corresponding digital badges will be issued through OSRHE’s Credly platform. These micro-credentials equal up to one semester of college credits at OSU-IT.

Commitment Requirement
Participants are expected to maintain a positive attitude and contribute to a safe learning environment for themselves and their classmates. Full participation is required Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Application Periods:
New classes begin every 12 to 16 weeks. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for upcoming classes.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a Cherokee Nation citizen or member of a federally recognized tribe
  • Reside within the Cherokee Nation Reservation
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Demonstrate the need for training

Candidates who apply will complete an initial pre-screening to determine whether they meet the basic eligibility requirements. Eligible candidates will then be scheduled for an in-person interview.
