Cherokee Nation tribal election results

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council will welcome back six incumbents and see two newcomers, as a result of the June 22 Tribal Council election. A run-off is also slated for the District 4 seat.

 The unofficial results of this year’s election are:
District 2 – Cherokee County:
Joe Byrd – Winner – 416 – 67.97%
Tamsye Dreadfulwater – 196 – 32.03%

(*Run-off) District 4 – Muskogee and McIntosh Counties:
*Don Garvin – 304 – 43.80%
*Mike Dobbins – 240 – 34.58%
Justin Carlton – 150 – 21.61%

District 5 – Muskogee and Sequoyah Counties:
David W. Thornton Sr. – Winner – 311 – 56.75%
Dink Scott – 193 – 35.22%
Sherri Doolin – 44 – 8.03%

District 7 – Adair County:
Frankie Hargis – Winner – 547 – 55.09%
Joe Adair – 446 – 44.91%

District 9 – Delaware and Mayes Counties:
Curtis Snell – Winner – 407 – 57.49%
Lonus Mitchell – 301 – 42.51%

District 10 – Delaware, Mayes and Ottawa Counties:
Harley Buzzard – Winner – 290 – 66.82%
Nettie Detherage – 144 – 33.18%

District 11 – Mayes, Craig and Nowata Counties:
Chuck Hoskin Jr. – Winner (unopposed)

District 15 – Mayes and Rogers Counties:
Janees Taylor – Winner – 289 – 50.70%
Meredith Frailey – 262 – 45.96%
Marilyn Cooper – 19 – 3.33%

At-Large:
Jack Baker – Winner- 739 – 51.64%
Curtis Bruehl – 435 – 30.40%
Ken Luttrell – 84 – 5.87%
Robin Mayes – 75 – 5.24%
Curtis West – 52 – 3.63%
Carole Richmond – 46 – 3.21%

Nearly 6,000 of the eligible 41,000 Cherokee Nation citizens, including absentee voters, cast their vote to determine who should help lead the tribe for the next four years.

Official results are expected no later than June 26.

 The Tribal Council passed legislation in 2012 to redistrict from five to 15 districts starting with the June 22 election. The council also has two, At-Large council members. A run-off election will be held July 27.
